"King Status"

$30.00 USD - $4,500.00 USD

The misrepresentation of Black men in media, education, and society at large is a longstanding issue with deep historical roots. From the era of slavery to modern-day film and news coverage, Black men have often been portrayed through distorted lenses criminalized, hyper sexualized, or reduced to harmful stereotypes like the “thug,” the “absent father,” or the “athlete.”

These portrayals do more than simply misinform they dehumanize. They shape public perception, influence policy, and often justify disproportionate policing, sentencing, and social exclusion. In schools, Black boys are more likely to be disciplined harshly or labeled as aggressive, even when displaying age-appropriate behavior. In the workplace, they may be seen as threatening rather than competent, as passionate rather than professional.

This painting, King Status, defies the stereotype. He’s an artist, scholar, father, mentor, leader, and everyday individual who destroys the narratives placed upon him.
